The Richat Structure, also known as the Eye of the Sahara, is a prominent geological feature in the Adrar Plateau of Mauritania. It's a deeply eroded, slightly elliptical dome with a diameter of approximately 40 kilometers, revealing layers of sedimentary and igneous rock in concentric rings. Due to its vastness, the structure is best viewed from above, making aerial tours or satellite imagery the most effective ways to appreciate its scale and intricate patterns. Access to the Richat Structure is challenging, requiring a 4x4 vehicle and experienced guides due to its remote desert location. Given the harsh environment, solo travel is strongly discouraged. Visits are generally possible year-round, but the cooler months (November to February) are more comfortable. Costs can vary widely depending on transportation and tour arrangements, but expect a significant expense due to the logistical challenges. A typical visit, excluding travel time to the site, might last a full day to explore different vantage points and appreciate the geological wonder.
