Stuðlagil Canyon, famed for its towering basalt columns and often strikingly turquoise river (Jökulsá á Dal), offers two main access points: an easily accessible East side viewing platform (10-15 min walk from parking) suitable for most mobility levels, or a more challenging 3-4 hour return hike from the West side to reach the canyon floor. Visiting solo is common, but guided tours are available, especially for the West side's longer hike or to combine with other East Iceland attractions. It is best visited from late spring to early autumn; Road 923 to the West side is often impassable in winter due to snow and ice, and other roads can be treacherous. There is no entrance fee, making the primary cost transportation (rental car and fuel) or a tour. Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour for the East side, or a half-day for the West side hike including travel. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, layer clothing, and bring water, as facilities are absent. The river's famous turquoise color is dependent on the Kárahnjúkar dam's operation and glacial melt, so conditions can vary.
